Transportation & Parking

• Parking: Free parking is available right outside the unit. Please park in the section of the driveway directly in front of the unit.
• Winter Driving: Driving in Beech Mountain during the winter can be challenging, so we recommend using a 4WD or AWD vehicle for navigating the steep, snowy roads. During heavy winter storms, snow chains may be required and are available for rent at several locations in town for added safety.

Trash Disposal

To keep our mountain home safe and clean, please follow these guidelines for trash disposal:

• All trash should be placed in the bear-proof metal trash enclosure located near the road. Ensure the lid is securely closed after use.
• Do not leave any trash outside, as it will attract bears and other wildlife quickly.
• If the trash enclosure is full, please leave the trash inside the house until space is available or until pickup.
• Important: After placing trash in the enclosure, raise the mailbox-style flag on the enclosure so the trash collectors know to pick it up.
• Trash pickup is every Monday, so make sure to raise the flag in time for collection.

By following these steps, we can help keep the house safe and ensure timely trash collection without any visits from our bear neighbors!

Heating Instructions

Your comfort is a priority, and the house is equipped with several heating options to ensure you stay warm during your stay. Here’s how to best use each type of heating system:

1. Electric Baseboard Heat

The house features electric baseboard heaters throughout. Most of the baseboard units are controlled by turning a dial located on the front right side of the heater. While these heaters are effective, we recommend using the electric fireplaces to regulate the temperature first.

2. Electric Fireplaces

There are four electric fireplaces in the house, which are more efficient at maintaining a steady temperature. To operate:

• Turn the power on using the top red button.
• Adjust the thermostat with the bottom button to set your desired temperature.

3. Propane Wall Furnace (First Level)

On the first level, the propane wall furnace offers another heating option. To operate:

• Use the dial on the top of the furnace to control the heat.
• If the pilot light needs to be lit, turn the dial to "Pilot" and hold it down while pressing the red igniter button.
• Once the pilot light ignites, continue holding the button for approximately 30 seconds to ensure it stays lit. Then, turn the dial to adjust the heat.

4. Gas Fireplace (Living Room)

The living room features a gas fireplace, which is simple to operate:

• Use the wall controls to select the amount of time you'd like the fireplace to run by pressing the corresponding button. The fireplace will automatically turn off when the timer runs out.

5. Fire Table (Back Deck)

For a cozy outdoor experience, the fire table on the back deck can be used to add warmth while you enjoy the views. To light:

• Turn the dial to "Low" and hold it down.
• Press the igniter button until it lights, then continue holding the dial for a few seconds.
• Please turn off the fire table when not in use and allow it to cool before covering it to protect it from the elements.

Note: For safety, avoid leaving the fire table on for long periods when unattended. Always ensure it's turned off before leaving the deck.

Fred's Mercantile is a charming, family-owned grocery store located in Beech Mountain. It offers a variety of grocery items, including fresh produce, meats, dairy, and pantry staples. Fred’s also features a selection of local products and snacks, making it a great spot for picking up unique souvenirs or last-minute supplies. The friendly staff adds to the welcoming atmosphere, ensuring a pleasant shopping experience.

2. Lowe’s Foods of Banner Elk

Just a short drive from Beech Mountain, Lowe’s Foods is a larger supermarket that provides a wide selection of groceries, household items, and local products. You’ll find everything from fresh produce and meats to bakery items and deli options. They also have a beer and wine section, along with a delightful prepared foods area featuring ready-to-eat meals for when you want a break from cooking.

3. Food Lion in Banner Elk

Food Lion is another convenient option located in Banner Elk, offering a good variety of groceries at competitive prices. The store is well-stocked with fresh produce, dairy products, and household essentials. It’s a reliable stop for all your grocery needs, whether you're stocking up for your stay or just need to grab a few items.

Note: For those looking to purchase liquor, it must be bought from the ABC Store located in the same plaza as Lowe’s Foods in Banner Elk. Be sure to check their hours before heading over!
